England Badminton Association County Challenge Finals 2016

OVER 40's

Leicestershire Badminton's two Premier Division representatives at the National Inter County Challenge had mixed fortunes.

The Over 40's had high hopes of winning the title that they held in 2014. After wins against Lancashire and Oxfordshire, a draw against Gloucestershire and a defeat against Yorkshire, the County were left with the task of beating Essex in their final match to secure top spot. The score after the mens and ladies doubles was 1-1 meaning that both mixed rubbers had to be won. A tactical team reshuffle by Essex put their strongest man and strongest lady together at number one mixed and proved just too much for Leicestershire. The County won the second of the mixed rubbers to secure a 2-2 and a very creditable second spot.

OVER 60s

After gaining promotion to the Premier division Leicestershire Over 60s came down to earth with a bump at The Badminton Association courts at Milton Keynes. Having been undefeated last year the team only managed two draws against Lancashire and Essex from the six matches played at this top level. It may be that a team with 5 over 65s found the going just too tough.

These results do not however tell the story of many close games and valiant efforts from the team. Unfortunately, it was not until the supposedly more difficult second day of play that the team gained its two draws and by then it was too late.

The result means that the Over 60s will be back in Division 1A next year. It could be a different story for the Over 65s though!
